Biological Basis for Coffee Enemas
a lecture by Gar Hildenbrand,

When you improve the sodium ring around tumors and diseased tissue, the first thing that happens is that tissue gets better drainage and better circulation. And the cells begin to function normally. And when cells begin to function normally, they do what's normal for cells, they behave like themselves. And that means our tissues are now themselves again. They bring, with normal function, requisite behavior for health, which is resistance to disease, and immunity against extant disease. That's were tissue immunity comes from, and that's where tumor immunities come from the health of normal tissue.The coffee enema is capable of removing circulating toxins and partial metabolites for one specific reason, and that is that the coffee enema not only dilates bile ducts - which Gerson knew - we now know, from the work of Wattenberg, Sparnins, and Lam at the University of Minnesota, Department of Pathology, Minneapolis, that coffee stimulates an enzyme system in the liver, glutathione-S-transferase, that is capable of removing a vast variety of electrophiles from the bloodstream. Electrophiles are referred to in popular literature as free radicals. 

Electrophiles are atomic particles with one or more electrons in unpaired spins. They have an affinity for electrons and they want to get involved where they should not get involved. They are charged particles, and they will damage membranes of cells and they will inflict disturbances in cellular metabolism.

Under the influence of a coffee enema the glutathione-S-transferase enzyme system - part of the ligandine  enzyme system that accounts for about 3% of all enzymes in the liver,  responsible for removing electrophiles from the blood stream - will be increased in activity from 600%-700% above normal. No materials other than coffee are known to stimulate it as much. That's why people are known to get  a buzz off of a cup of coffee in the morning, and why some people are too  grouchy to do anything but read the newspaper until they've had their coffee, and why coffee is so effective in clearing heads.

The coffee enema stimulates the glutathione-S-transferase system by 700%. During the time that the coffee enema is being held in the gut, all the blood in the body passes through the liver at least five times. Every three minutes, all the blood in your body passes through your liver. In addition to stimulating the enzyme system, the theobromine, theophylline, and the caffeine in coffee all have physiological effects. Among these are the dilation of blood vessels and bile ducts, the relaxation of smooth muscles, and the increase of bile flow. The palmitates, compounds in the coffee that actually stimulate glutathione-S-transferase, also cause increased bile flow.

In addition to that, the quart of water in your gut stimulates what is called the visceral nervous system. The viscera are the guts. The visceral nervous system is the nervous system that orchestrates what is called peristalsis, the weak force that moves materials through the  intestines. The visceral nervous system is stimulated by a quart of water in the gut. Additionally, at least part of that quart of water passes through the wall of the gut and dilutes the hemorrhoidal and then the portal blood  which goes into the liver, socks the liver, actually dilutes the bile and causes more readily increased bile flow. Also, the net effect of the coffee enema is to cause a flushing of toxic bile, or bile that has been loaded with toxins by the glutathione-S-transferase system, out of the intestines.

Glutathione-S-transferase shuttles; it's an enzyme catalyst. It's out there catching free radicals, like an outfielder on a baseball team, and throwing them to the glutathione molecule of the bile. The glutathione molecule has a branch called the sulfhydryl part that absorbs many electrophiles. It makes them inert in the same way that a clay slough can make atomic waste inert because it has great adsorptive capabilities. What then happens is that these things become bile solutes. The bile solutets in the bile are flushed out of the gallbladder and the liver, and into the duodenum, and peristalsis carries them through the small intestine,through the colon and out the rectum. That is effective dialysis. The coffee enema is the only pharmaceutically effective choleretic in the medical literature that is repeatable many times daily; choleretic, like diuretic. Diuretics cause urination. Choloretics cause bile flow.

The coffee enema is safe and effective when used as a part of this program as our physicians direct. Dr. Peter Lechner at the Landeskrankenhaus of Graz, Austria, has been working for six years  now, studying a very modified Gerson Therapy. He has been using the coffee enemas as part of the post-surgical programs of the second surgery department of Landeskrankenhaus. He did some rat experiments in which palmitates were extracted from coffee, the cafestol palmitates, and in which they were seen to increase bile flow in the rats. Lechner became convinced, and wrote in a journal called Aktuelle  ErnE5hrungsmedizin (Contemporary Nutritional Medicine), 2 Band 15, April 1990, that  these palmitic acid salts could be very powerful liver protective drugs  if they would be developed by a pharmaceutical corporation.

Until that time, as he said, "We have to continue to administer them in the awkward form of enemas... because patients cannot be expected to consume the therapeutically necessary daily amount of at least one liter of coffee by drinking it, without risking side effects in the upper alimentary tract." Nothing else works.

In the Second Surgery Department of the Landeskrankenhaus in Graz, Lechner has a bunch of very normal colleagues who are none of them enthusiastic about alternative therapies. But neither are they willing to argue with scientific fact. This is a 20 six-year-long program. Its findings have been published twice.

So now you have coffee enemas cleansing the blood. What is the coffee enema removing? Ammonia-like products, toxic-bound nitrogen, protein derivatives that are often times charged particles, polyamines, amino acid clumps and complexes.

When I first talked to Regelson, in 1981, he asked me if the coffee enemas had been studied in the filed of Ammoniapathophysiology. I said I didn't know what he was talking about. He said, "The name Visik, the father of Ammoniapathophysiology. You probably haven't been taught about it because it is veterinary medicine." I said, "Oh, enlighten me please." He said that it was very simple. =

Visik proposed and proved that if you antibios feedlot animals, you'll cut down on the amount of urea-splitting bacteria in their guts, lower their tissue and serum ammonia levels, and they will gain more carcass weight. You can get bigger, stronger, more muscle-loaded feedlot animals for more beef if you give them antibiotics. That is why we give antibiotics to beef.

We could give coffee enemas to animals and have the same effects. That's why Regelson wanted to know if we had studied this in the field of Ammoniapathhophysiology; that's where the coffee enemas belong. We are actually altering the level of tissue ammonias; and if it can help cattle to gain carcass weight in a feedlot, eating those ridiculous high-grain diets that cause the bacterial problems in the first place. Cattle are not designed to eat a lot of grain - if that can happen, certainly,  coffee enemas, having similar effect in people who are not being  subjected to high-grain diets, can improve tissue resistance. And they do.

COFFEE ENEMA

Why in the world would someone use coffee in an enema? That is the question I asked when my health practitioner suggested I do coffee enemas. Yet when I got over my initial resistance, I quickly saw the benefits of coffee enemas.

I have since recommended them to over a thousand patients. Many have told me how wonderful they are. Several said coffee enemas saved their lives. Indeed, they are most helpful for many types of conditions. The procedure is also inexpensive and can be done at home without special equipment. 

Enemas are an ancient form of hydrotherapy. They have been used for hundreds of years for mechanically cleansing the colon. Enemas and colonic irrigation used to be routine procedures in hospitals. There are many types of enemas used for varying purposes.

Coffee enemas were first popularized by Max Gerson, MD, author of A Cancer Therapy - Results of 50 Cases. Dr. Gerson pioneered nutritional therapy for cancer and other diseases with excellent results. His therapy combined coffee enemas with a special diet, juices and other supplements. The enemas were an integral part of the therapy.

The major benefit of the coffee enema, he said, is to enhance elimination of toxins through the liver. Indeed, endoscopic studies confirm they increase bile output. A patient was given a coffee enema while an endoscope monitored the entrance to the common bile duct. Within minutes of administering the enema, bile flow increased.

Increased bile flow also alkalinizes the small intestine and promotes improved digestion. Coffee also acts as an astringent in the large intestine, helping clean the colon walls.

A common contributor to ill health is the production and absorption of toxins within the small and large intestines. If food is not digested properly, sugars ferment and protein putrefies or rots. Both processes generate toxic chemicals which are then absorbed into the liver. The coffee enema enhances digestion by increasing bile flow and removes toxins in the large intestine so they will not be absorbed. Most people with health complaints suffer from impaired digestion and production of toxic substances in the intestines.

Coffee enemas are particularly helpful for slow oxidizers. Their liver activity is more sluggish and digestion is usually impaired. Fast oxidizers may have more difficulty retaining the enema. The procedure described below is really a coffee implant rather than an enema, because it involves only two to three cups of water. Using a quart of water may be more difficult to retain for some individuals. 

However, the use of a quart of water, and making sure the water reaches most of the large intestine, is more helpful for cleansing the colon of accumulated waste material. If one suspects severe bowel toxicity or in cases of serious illness, quart enemas are preferable, at least to start with.

Dr. Gerson recommended the coffee enema up to 6 times daily for severely ill cancer patients. His patients continued them for up to several years with no ill effects. I usually suggest one enema per day to assist detoxification or to enhance liver activity. Two enemas daily may be taken during a healing reaction if needed. For those who are very ill, several a day may are best for at least several months. For best results, a program of coffee enemas should be carried on for at least a month. They should not be needed for more than two or three years, although many people have continued to take them for a number of years without problems.

The best time to take the enema is after a normal movement. One will get a slight rush from the caffeine, but it is not like drinking coffee, which I do not recommend. Coffee enemas taken in the evening may interfere with sleep. 

If performed properly, coffee implants do not cause habituation, constipation or any rectal problems. In over 23 years of practice, I have not seen important negative effects of coffee enemas in those who need them. Difficulties occasionally arise if one has hemorrhoids. In these cases, extra care is needed in inserting the enema tip. Some people with hemorrhoids find the enemas irritating.

A small number of people are unable to retain even a cup of water for the required 15 minutes. One can start with less coffee or less water in these cases. There seems to be no harm if one wishes to retain the enema longer than 15 minutes. While enemas may seem uncomfortable, many clients report the procedure is so helpful they soon forget the inconvenience. 

Step 1. Materials

* Buy a 2-quart enema bag with a clamp. This is sold at drug stores. The enema/douche bag combination is easier to use.

* Buy any brand of regular coffee - regular grind or flaked, non-instant and not decaffeinated, or grind your own coffee. Organically grown coffee is best, though any coffee will do. Organic coffee is available at natural food stores. Store opened coffee containers in the freezer for maximum freshness.

Step 2. Preparation of coffee

There are two methods. The first is best.

* Place 2 to 3 cups of purified water and two to three tablespoons of coffee in a saucepan and bring to a boil (or use a coffee maker).

* Let it boil 5 minutes, then turn off the heat and allow it to cool. One or two ice cubes may be added to speed the cooling process. You may make a larger quantity and use it for several enemas.

* Wait until the water is comfortable to the touch. If the water is too hot or too cold, retaining the enema will be more difficult. Strain the liquid through a fine strainer or coffee filter paper into a clean enema bag. Screw on the top of the enema bag. The enema is now ready. 

The alternative non-boil method:

* Place 1 cup of ground coffee in a container with 2 cups of water. Stir the mixture thoroughly and allow it to soak overnight. (You may make a larger quantity if desired.)

* In the morning, filter the liquid through coffee filter paper or a fine strainer. Place in a jar for storage in the refrigerator.

* To prepare an enema, pour 2 cups of purified water into the enema bag. Add 2 or 3 tablespoons of the coffee liquid from the jar.

Step 3. Preparing to take the enema

* Be sure the plastic hose is pushed or fastened well onto the enema bag and the thin enema tip is attached to the other end.

* Remove any air from the enema tube the following way. Grasp but do not close the clamp on the hose. Place the tip in the sink. Hold up the enema bag above the tip until the water begins to flow out. Then close the clamp. This expels any air in the tube.

* Lubricate the enema tip with a small amount of soap or oil. (Too much lubrication will cause the tip to fall out of the rectum, creating a mess!).

Step 4. Taking the enema

* The position preferred by most people is lying on one's back on a towel, on the bathroom floor or in the bath tub.

* With the clamp closed, place the enema bag on the floor next to you, or hang the bag about one foot above your abdomen.

* Insert the tip gently and slowly. Move it around until it goes all the way in.

* Open the clamp and hold the enema bag about one foot above the abdomen. The water may take a few seconds to begin flowing. If the water does not flow, you may gently squeeze the bag. If you develop a cramp, close the hose clamp, turn from side to side and take a few deep breaths. The cramp will usually pass quickly.

* When all the liquid is inside, the bag will become flat. Close the clamp. You can leave the tube inserted, or remove it slowly.

* RETAIN THE ENEMA FOR 15 MINUTES. See below if you have difficulties with this. You may remain lying on the floor. Use the time to read a book, meditate, etc. Some people are able to get up and go lie on a towel in bed, instead of on the floor. Walking around the house with the coffee inside is not recommended.

Step 5. Finishing up

* After 15 minutes or so, go to the toilet and empty out the water. It is okay if some water remains inside. If water remains inside often, you are dehydrated.

* Wash the enema bag and tube thoroughly with soap and water.

Hints regarding enemas:

* If possible, do the enema after a bowel movement to make it easier to retain the coffee. If this is not possible, take a plain water enema first if needed, to clean out the colon.

* If intestinal gas is a problem, some exercise before the enema may eliminate the gas.

* It is not essential but is helpful if the water fills the entire colon. You can assist by first lying on your right side for 5 minutes, then on your back for 5 minutes, and then on your left side for 5 minutes.

* If water will not flow around the entire colon, you may gently massage your abdomen. Some people attach a 30-inch colon tube to the tip of the enema tube, and insert the tube so the water will reach the right side of the colon.

* If the enema makes you jittery, reduce the amount of coffee.

* The enema may lower your blood sugar. If so, eat something just before or after taking the enema.

* If you have trouble holding the enema, here are suggestions. 

1) Be patient. Practice makes perfect.
2) The water may be too hot or too cold. Be sure the water temperature is comfortable.
3) It may help to place a small pillow or rolled up towel under your buttocks so the water flows down hill into your colon.
4) If trouble continues, try reducing the amount of coffee or add 2 tablespoons of blackstrap molasses to the water.

The Coffee Enema for Liver Detoxification


The use of coffee in enemas for detoxification purposes is well known. It is a common herbalogical remedy that has been suggested by holistic and alternative medicine professionals for many years.

The Coffee Enema for Liver Detoxification

The coffee enema has been used for many years to detoxify the liver. It is a low-volume enema that remains only in the sigmoid colon. There is a duct between the sigmoid colon and the liver called the entero-hepatic circulation system. When the stool reaches this point, it contains many toxins, which are sent to the liver for detoxification. The coffee enema will increase the transit time in the bowel. The caffeine that is absorbed into the entero-hepatic system causes the liver ducts, including the bile ducts, to empty into the sigmoid colon and be eliminated. Releasing the toxins in the liver ducts, makes room for toxins from the body to enter the liver for detoxification. The alkaloids in the caffeine stimulate the production of glutathione-S-transferase, which is an enzyme that facilitates the liver detoxification pathways.

Coffee enemas will not waste minerals and electrolytes because they have already been absorbed in the previous sections of the intestines. The coffee enema is safe even for people who are sensitive to caffeine because the coffee remains in the sigmoid colon, where it will not be absorbed, provided the proper amount is used and the enema bag is not place too high.

Boil 1 quart of water in a non-aluminum pot. Add 2 tablespoons or more of coffee and continue to boil for 5 minutes. Remove pot from the heat and add 1 tablespoon of unsulfured molasses (optional). Cool to 90 degrees F. or less. Pour the coffee mixture through a fine mesh strainer into two 1 cup measuring cups. Clamp the end of the enema bag. Pour 1 cup of filtered coffee mixture into the enema bag. Release the clamp until the coffee begins to flow out, then clamp the bag again immediately.

Hang the enema bag at a height of about 3 feet, not higher. Lie on the floor and gently insert the nozzle. Use vegetable oil on the nozzle if needed. Release the clamp and let the coffee mixture flow into the sigmoid colon. Clamp the tubing as soon as there is a sensation of ”fullness” or when the enema bag is empty and remove the nozzle. If possible, without forcing yourself, retain the enema for 10 minutes, then empty your bowel.

After emptying your bowel, repeat the process with the remaining (1 cup) of coffee mixture. If you cannot hold 1 cup of coffee mixture enema, take several smaller enemas.

When the bile duct empties, you will hear or feel a squirting sensation in the area of your right rib cage. After feeling the bile emptying, you can stop taking enemas for that day.

If you do not feel the bile duct emptying after one week of daily enemas, increase the strength of the coffee or take slightly larger volume enemas.

You should not feel nervous or jittery after the enema because the coffee does not get absorbed systemically. If you do feel nervous, jittery, have palpitations, or irregular heartbeats, after a coffee enema, reduce the amount of coffee by half or more.

Repeat enemas as needed to detoxify chemical toxins and/or allergic reactions.

Recipe 2

Supplies

You will need to buy a re-usable enema kit, available at most pharmacies. They are usually disposable (although they can be cleaned and reused for several months) and they are inexpensive.
Distilled water.
Organic coffee, any roasting level will do.
French Press pot.

Preparing the Coffee

Bring 8 cups of water to a boil.
Grind eight heaping spoonfuls of organic coffee. Put it in a french press pot.
Pour the water over the coffee grounds and let it steep then cool for one hour.
After this amount of time, the liquid should be about body temperature. If you stick your finger in the water it should be lukewarm, but not hot.
Press the coffee grounds to the bottom, then pour the coffee liquid into the enema bag.

Directions

Follow the directions that accompany the enema kit. Lie on your right side, inject and retain the coffee for 10-20 minutes.
I recommend lightly massaging your abdomen from left to right (up the left side, and then left to right just below the navel).
Additionally, I recommend changing positions while retaining the coffee. After a few minutes turn over onto your back, a few minutes later switch to your left side before evacuating your bowels.
The effects of a coffee enema are different than a saline enema. The most important difference between a saline enema and a coffee enema is the presence of caffeine in the coffee. Caffeine, theophylline and theobromine, combine to stimulate the relaxation of smooth muscles causing dilatation of blood vessels and bile ducts. The effects of having a coffee enema are not the same as drinking coffee. The veins of the anus are very close to the surface of the tissue. The caffeine is therefore absorbed more quickly (and in higher concentration) than it is in when coffee is drunk.
Coffee has a chemical makeup that is stimulative. The enzymes in coffee, known as palmitates, help the liver carry away the toxins in bile acid. The coffee is absorbed into the hemorrhoidal vein, then taken up to the liver by the portal vein. With the bile ducts dilated, bile carries toxins away to the gastro-intestinal tract. Simultaneously, peristaltic activity is encouraged because of the flooding of the lower colon. Thus, when the colon is evacuated, the toxins and bile are carried out of the body.

Recipe 3

Coffee Enema Recipe:

In a non-metal pot or saucepan:
empty 4 cups of filtered or distilled water
3/4 cup of organic coffee enema (finely ground) from health store
Stir in the coffee to make sure all is mixed in the water,
then: bring to a boil and boil for 3 to 5 minutes (while stirring occasionally)

Reduce heat and cover pot or saucepan with lid and let simmer for 15 to 20 minutes

Remove from stove element and let coffee enema cool down to room temperature

Strain coffee through fine sieve to remove as many coffee grinds as possible.

Because of the boiling process, some of the water evaporated, so add plain filtered or distilled water to the coffee to bring it up to 4 full cups.

Store the coffee in a sealed container and keep refrigerated.

The instructions I read said coffee enema stays good for 4 to 5 days and should be used within that time for optimum benefits.


Coffee Enema Set Up:

In a large measuring container (at least 4 cup size):
Pour 1 cup of the concentrated organic coffy from the container in the fridge.
Add 3 cups of filtered or distilled water to make 4 cups total.
Pour diluted koffee into a saucepan and heat it until it is lukewarm.

Immediately pour it into the bucket or bag and do right away so it doesn´t get too cool.

In whichever way is most comfortable (kneeling, squatting or laying down) gently insert tube tip into the rectum for at least 4 inches if possible.

You can lubricate it with olive oil.

If there is rectal bleeding or severe pain or swelling, it is risky to force an the tube, as this may aggravate the problem or even perforate the bowel wall.

So, it is best to wait until any bleeding or severe discomfort passes before doing an douche.

It is best to place the bag bucket about 18 inches to 2 feet above floor level so gravity will send the coffee downward to your colon.

Any higher may result in too fast a flow and cause abdominal cramping and gas.

If the bucket is too low then the flow will be too slow.

Just make sure the level of the bag bucket is best for your particular comfort and needs.
Each person has a different preference.
After the tube is inserted as far as is comfortable, lay down on your Left Side and allow the lukewarm coffy to enter your colon.
